Edge Deployment Engineer
Job Description
About Rune
Rune Technologies is here to revolutionize the status quo of military logistics and sustainment through the deployment of AI-enabled solutions. Combining elite Silicon Valley software expertise with deep operational experience working in and with the Department of Defense, Rune builds cutting-edge software to solve the most critical logistics challenges faced by the U.S. military and its allies. Rune’s flagship product is TyrOS, an advanced software platform to enhance logistics at tactical and operational echelons, providing unified, comprehensive management of inventory, personnel, equipment and distribution. TyrOS integrates critical information for holistic, data-driven logistics decisions, leveraging AI for decision support, predictive analytics and optimization at machine speed. Rune’s mission is to support and enable the military logistics and sustainment communities with software to meet needs for the next fight.
About the Role
The Edge Systems team at Rune is building the infrastructure layer that enables logistics software to operate at the tactical edge — across air-gapped, low-bandwidth, and resource-constrained environments. As a Lead Edge Deployment Engineer, you’ll own the end-to-end deployment architecture that powers Rune’s mission-critical systems in disconnected and austere environments.
You will lead efforts to design and automate the full pipeline of provisioning, configuration, and deployment across heterogeneous hardware — from bare metal servers to embedded devices and virtualized edge nodes. Your work will ensure that every system we deploy is operationally ready from first boot, with hardened configurations, reliable monitoring, and a fully integrated software stack.
This role requires deep systems expertise, strong automation instincts, and leadership in cross-functional contexts. You’ll write tooling in Python, Bash, and Go; build and manage a hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SITL) lab; and shape the edge deployment strategy used by both military and commercial operators.
What You'll Do
Lead the design, automation, and standardization of our edge provisioning pipeline — from OS and hypervisor setup to application deployment and monitoring.
Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Ansible, Terraform, and custom tools written in Python, Bash, and Go.
Architect containerized deployment systems with Docker and Kubernetes, tailored for air-gapped and intermittent connectivity environments.
Manage fleet-wide observability and health using Prometheus, Grafana, and the LGTM stack — even across isolated networks.
Build and operate a hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SITL) lab for pre-deployment testing and validation.
Collaborate with backend engineers, platform leads, and operations teams to ensure deployment workflows are robust, scalable, and field-ready.
Guide junior engineers and help define best practices for system hardening, update pipelines, and field diagnostics.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or Linux systems engineering, including deploying and maintaining complex infrastructure.
Deep fluency in Linux internals, bootstrapping, virtualization, and system-level configuration.
Expertise with bare metal, VMware, and containerized deployments in non-cloud environments.
Programming ability in Bash and Python; production experience in Go is highly desirable.
Advanced knowledge of networking, including routing, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and firewalling.
Experience deploying observability stacks like Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki, or equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
Experience leading infrastructure efforts in air-gapped, military, or industrial environments.
Background in HITL/SITL lab design, hardware provisioning, or automated QA for physical deployments.
Familiarity with secure boot processes, OTA update pipelines, and cryptographically signed artifacts.
Operational experience with PXE boot, firmware automation, or bare metal orchestrators.
Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, influence architecture, and drive operational excellence at scale.
