Director of Product Management, Human Resources
Job Description
As a Director of Product Management for Principal’s Human Resources organization, you’ll lead a global team of Product Managers in the ownership and global usability of employee experience and case & knowledge management products.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Global HR Product Function: Building the global function of product for HR, which involves establishing the discipline of product management within the HR domain and ensuring its effective operation. Understanding and addressing the needs of different regions and ensuring that products are suitable for global deployment.
- Product Strategy & Roadmap: Developing and maintaining a product portfolio roadmap and strategy documents, outlining the strategic direction and priorities for HR products over a three-year period.
- Solutioning Frameworks: Developing solutioning frameworks and problem framing maps to facilitate the identification and resolution of business problems. These tools will help the product and engineering teams to understand the problems they need to solve and the solutions they need to develop.
- Product Family Metrics: Establishing product family metrics and OKRs for each product family. These metrics will be used to track the performance and progress of HR products, ensuring that they meet their targets and contribute to the overall strategic goals.
- Executive and Stakeholder Communication: Ensuring that key partners are informed about the progress and direction of HR products. This involves regular updates and strategic discussions with senior leaders.
- Customer and Market Insights: Maintaining customer and market insights to stay informed about trends and developments in the HR product space. This knowledge will help guide the strategic direction and ensure that HR products remain competitive and relevant.
- Resource Optimization: Managing and optimizing resources across product lifecycles, ensuring the right allocation during different phases.
- Strategic Refinement & Alignment: Continuously refine the HR product strategy, updating it annually in quarter three to reflect new insights and changing business needs. Ensuring strategic alignment across HR and other business areas, influencing product teams.
- Global People Leadership: Leading and developing the global product team, requiring a global perspective to apply products for global usage across all locations. Foster a strong product culture, mentor talent, and assess team health and effectiveness over time.

Who You Are
- 10+ years of business, technology, or product management experience; or equivalent demonstrated through the following: work experience, military experience, or education
- 7+ years working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced product environment
- 4+ years of people management experience, growing the talent of individuals and teams
- Demonstrated success managing complex stakeholder expectations across multiple products
- Proven success in driving product outcomes in a multi-product environment while establishing business strategy for multiple products and helping others establish product strategy
- Demonstrated understanding of the techniques and methods of modern product discovery and product delivery and the ability to mentor that in others
- Understanding of various approaches and tools for research, synthesis, ideation, and testing in a dynamic dual track discovery and delivery loop
- Proven success building positive relationships with different functional partners with the ability to collaborate, work and influence at all levels within an organization
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to establish relationships and influence business partners
Skills that will help you stand out
- Leading global product delivery
- Background or familiarity with HR products at a global scale, including familiarity with HR regulations and compliance (e.g. FMLA, FLSA, GDPR, EEO) and Privacy by Design (PbD)
- Demonstrated ability to lead and grow a Product organization in a service center business unit, non-revenue generating, environment
- Product Management experience with large scale, multi-year technical implementations
- Demonstrated record of creating clarity from ambiguity and resiliency
- Familiar with human resources tech trends and emerging AI technologies
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$137000 - $185000 / year
Time Off Program
Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments
This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
Hours
Working hours for this role are based around US Central Time Zone core business hours 8:00am - 4:00pm with some flexibility within other Western Hemisphere time zones.
This role provides leadership for global teams and has an expectation for flexibility in your work schedule.
Travel
Typically twice annually to our corporate headquarters in Des Moines, IA.
