Design Manager I - Developer Enablement
Job Description
We’re looking for a Design Manager I to lead and grow the team responsible for Developer Enablement, a strategic area of Datadog’s platform that powers how engineers build, manage, and automate their services. This team’s work sits at the intersection of developer workflows, platform extensibility, and operational efficiency—serving personas like DevOps engineers, SREs, software engineers, and platform engineering teams.
The Developer Enablement team designs two deeply connected product areas. The Action Platform, which includes App Builder and Workflow Automations, enables engineers to build and reuse automations across the Datadog ecosystem. The Internal Developer Portal (IDP) gives engineers a central interface for understanding service ownership, spinning up new infrastructure, and tracking operational health. Together, these tools reduce manual toil, promote best practices, and accelerate incident response and remediation in complex environments.
As a Design Manager, you’ll support a team of five designers working across these surfaces—leading definition for 0-1 products, oversee scale products to new personas, and lay the groundwork for new and exciting experiences. You’ll grow the team’s capabilities through hiring and mentorship, guide cross-platform UX strategy in partnership with engineering and product, and help scale the systems and processes that support high-quality design work. The team is made up of full-stack product designers who work across discovery, prototyping, design systems, and implementation alongside tightly aligned engineering partners.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and support a team of 5 product designers across the Actions and IDP scope, with opportunities to grow the team.
- Recruit and retain top design talent, fostering a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and feedback.
- Provide coaching and mentorship on product design, team operations, and individual growth.
- Support your team through design critiques, feedback, and regular coaching.
- Partner closely with design leads, PMs, and engineering managers to shape product strategy and translate it into high-quality user experiences.
- Drive collaboration across adjacent design teams to align shared UX patterns and end-to-end workflows.
- Own team planning and execution, ensuring alignment with product and business objectives.
- Advocate for user-centered design practices grounded in data, research, and technical understanding.
- Identify opportunities to improve design team processes, workflows, and cross-team collaboration.
Who You Are
- Experienced in designing and managing technical SaaS products.
- Demonstrated leadership in guiding teams through the full design process from concept to launch, with minimal oversight.
- Comfortable managing across multiple, interconnected workstreams and helping teams navigate ambiguity.
- Have managed multiple design teams and individuals for 3+ years.
- Bring at least 8 years of digital product design experience, with a focus on technical or developer tooling products.
- Skilled in setting team goals and prioritizing features that align with business needs.
- Effective at giving and receiving feedback, enhancing the work environment and team collaborations.
- Communicate clearly and proactively with cross-functional partners and stakeholders.
- Able to clearly articulate design decisions and strategies that are grounded in human-centered design principles and data.
- Known for balancing fast iteration, strategic ambiguity, and high-quality outcomes in a dynamic business environment.
- Care about building a healthy, inclusive, and high-performing team.
- Motivated by solving hard problems, learning in complex domains, and raising the bar for user experience.
Benefits and Growth
- New hire stock equity (RSUs) and employee stock purchase plan (ESPP)
- Continuous professional development, product training, and career pathing
