The Role
The Bio+Health Business Development (BD) and Corporate Development (CD) teams support a16z portfolio companies across:
- BD strategy and planning and M&A
- Financing strategy and planning
- Partner and investor insights
- Pipeline and portfolio strategy
- Transactions and negotiations
The BD and CD teams also provide valuable input into our understanding of portfolio company progress and opportunities and key investing team decisions
The Partner will drive analytical BD & CD initiatives to help our life sciences portfolio companies: (1) develop BD and Financing strategy, (2) maximize partnership, financing and other transaction outcomes, and (3) better assess commercial / competitive landscapes and pipeline opportunities
The BD & CD Partner will also support the broader a16z Bio+Health investing team to: (1) assess product and company-specific valuations that impact investment decisions and (2) monitor and develop sell/hold recommendations for our public stock holdings.
You will work closely with the Life Sciences BD & CD leads, as well as partner with our investing team and portfolio companies on a variety of data-driven projects.
We are open to candidates based in New York City, NY or Menlo Park, CA. The role requires an in office presence at least 1-2 days a week.
To join our team, you should be excited to:
- Work with a16z portfolio founders and leadership teams on analytical projects to inform corporate and pipeline strategy, BD partner and investor target lists, deal structures, valuations, and negotiations of terms
- Manage, grow, and deepen a16z’s downstream life sciences investor networks
- Support assessment of and enable decision-making for a16z follow-ons and new investments, via product / company-specific valuations and exit value estimates
- Monitor a16z life sciences public holdings and develop hold / sell recommendations for GP Leadership and the Distribution Committee
- Lead various internal analytical processes e.g. quarterly portfolio reviews and deal trackers, audits, pharma and investor network maps, etc
Minimum Qualifications
- 5-7 years of analytical experience within investment banking or management consulting, with a focus on biotech and/or pharmaceutical companies
- A strong understanding of financial modeling and specific experience building models to support capital raising, BD and M&A transactions in the pharmaceutical / life sciences space
- Ability to navigate and leverage output from various databases, not limited to CapIQ, EvaluatePharma, GlobalData, Pitchbook, and more
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with both internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to manage competing priorities within a dynamic work environment
- Keen interest in science, novel biotech platforms, and the life sciences industry overall
- Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
The anticipated salary range for this role is between $192,000 - $224,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.
This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
